What is cryptocurrency staking?

Staking is the process of locking your cryptocurrencies in a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain network to help validate transactions and maintain network security. In return, you receive rewards in the form of new tokens, similar to earning interest on a savings account.

Networks like Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, Polkadot and Avalanche use PoS consensus mechanisms, where validators are selected based on the amount of tokens they have staked. The more you stake, the higher your probability of being selected as a validator.

How are staking rewards calculated?

Staking rewards are calculated based on the APY (Annual Percentage Yield), which represents the annual compound return. Our calculator uses the compound interest formula:

Reward = Amount × ((1 + APY/365)^days - 1)

The actual APY varies based on several factors: total amount staked on the network, token inflation, network fees and protocol policies. The APYs we show are approximations based on current yields for each network.

Staking risks and considerations

  • Lock-up period: many networks require a minimum staking period during which you cannot withdraw your tokens. Ethereum, for example, has a variable exit period.
  • Slashing: if the validator you delegate to acts maliciously or has excessive downtime, you may lose part of your staked tokens.
  • Price volatility: while you earn token rewards, the fiat value may decrease if the token price drops.
  • Protocol risk: smart contract bugs or protocol changes can affect rewards or the security of your funds.
