What is Wei and why is it used?
Wei is the smallest denomination of Ether (ETH), the native cryptocurrency of Ethereum. It is named after Wei Dai, a cryptographer who proposed b-money, one of the theoretical foundations of Bitcoin and modern cryptocurrencies.
The relationship is simple: 1 ETH = 10¹⁸ Wei (one quintillion Wei). This extreme granularity allows Ethereum to handle transactions with minimal fractions of value, which is essential for gas fees, micropayments, and DeFi operations where precision is critical.
What is Gwei and how does it relate to gas?
Gwei stands for giga-wei, meaning one billion (10⁹) Wei. It is also known as Shannon, named after Claude Shannon, the father of information theory. 1 Gwei = 0.000000001 ETH.
Gwei is the standard unit for expressing gas prices on Ethereum. Since the EIP-1559 upgrade (London Hard Fork), the cost of a transaction is calculated as:
Cost = Gas Units × (Base Fee + Priority Tip)
Where both the Base Fee and Priority Tip are expressed in Gwei. A simple ETH transfer consumes 21,000 gas units. If the gas price is 25 Gwei, the cost would be: 21,000 × 25 = 525,000 Gwei = 0.000525 ETH.
How to convert between Wei, Gwei and ETH?
Conversions are simple multiplications or divisions by powers of 10:
| Conversion | Operation | Example | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wei → Gwei | ÷ 10⁹ | 420,069,000,000 Wei | 420.069 Gwei |
| Wei → ETH | ÷ 10¹⁸ | 1,000,000,000,000,000 Wei | 0.001 ETH |
| Gwei → Wei | × 10⁹ | 25 Gwei | 25,000,000,000 Wei |
| Gwei → ETH | ÷ 10⁹ | 1,000 Gwei | 0.000001 ETH |
| ETH → Gwei | × 10⁹ | 0.05 ETH | 50,000,000 Gwei |
| ETH → Wei | × 10¹⁸ | 1 ETH | 10¹⁸ Wei |
In code (JavaScript/Solidity), libraries like ethers.js provide functions such as parseEther(), formatEther(), parseGwei(), and formatGwei() for these conversions.
